Canva Frames: The Hidden Tool for Stunning Photo Layouts

Most Canva users place their photos as simple rectangles. Frames unlock a completely different design vocabulary — photos in arched windows, circle portraits, star-shaped cutouts, and multi-photo collage layouts. Here's how to use them.

Finding and Using Frames

In the Canva left panel, go to Elements → Frames.
Browse shapes — basic shapes, phone screen mockups, abstract shapes, grid layouts, and more.
Drag a frame onto your canvas, then drag any photo directly into the frame. The photo auto-clips to the frame's shape.
Double-click the framed photo to reposition or rescale it within the frame.

Most Useful Frame Combinations

Circle frame + portrait photo: The classic for author bios, team pages, and social media profile cards.
Arch frame: Editorial and modern. Perfect for lifestyle brands, fashion, and beauty content.
Grid layout frames: Instant collage with consistent spacing. Great for product showcases, before/afters, and "types of" posts.
Phone/device frame: Places your screenshot inside a realistic device mockup — essential for app and digital product marketing.

Frame + Color = Cohesion

The background color you pair with a frame either harmonizes or clashes with your photo. Use ColorSense to extract the dominant tones from the photo going into the frame, then set the background in Canva to a complementary or neutral tone from that palette.
