Color Contrast in Design: Why Readability is Non-Negotiable
Poor color contrast is one of the most common design mistakes — and one of the most costly. Here's what contrast ratios mean, how to check them, and how to fix contrast issues in Canva.
You can have a beautiful color palette and still have an unreadable design. If your text doesn't have enough contrast against its background, people either can't read it or won't bother trying. Both outcomes cost you audience and trust.
What Contrast Ratio Means
Contrast ratio measures the difference in perceived luminance between two colors — typically your text color and its background. The WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines three levels:
- AA standard (4.5:1) — minimum for readable body text. Required for professional and legal compliance.
- AA large (3:1) — for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold). More relaxed threshold.
- AAA (7:1) — maximum accessibility. Ideal for high-stakes content.
The Most Common Contrast Mistakes
- White text on a light pastel background — looks soft and aesthetic, but often fails AA.
- Brand color text on brand color background — harmonious hues are often too similar in luminance.
- Yellow text on white — extremely common fail, despite the colors "going together."
- Low-opacity text layers — opacity drops contrast even if the original colors would pass.
How to Check Contrast Before Publishing
ColorSense has a built-in WCAG 2.1 contrast checker built into every color swatch it extracts. Upload your design image or brand photo — ColorSense shows you the contrast ratio for each color against white and black, along with AA/AAA pass/fail badges. Use this to verify your text colors before finalizing any design in Canva.
Fixing Contrast in Canva
- Darken or lighten your text color until it passes AA minimum.
- Add a semi-transparent overlay between your text and a photo background.
- Use a text box with a solid background fill behind your text for guaranteed readability.
