How to Create an eBook Cover in Canva That Actually Sells
Your eBook cover is a marketing asset, not just a wrapper. Here's how to design one in Canva that looks credible and makes people want to click.
People do judge eBooks by their covers — especially when browsing online. A well-designed cover communicates authority, professionalism, and quality before a single page is read. Here's how to design one that converts.
The Anatomy of a Strong eBook Cover
- Clear, benefit-driven title: Not just what the book is about — what the reader gets from it. "The Freelancer's Guide to Client Contracts" beats "All About Contracts."
- Author name: Always include it. Builds personal brand credibility even for first-time authors.
- Strong visual: Either a relevant photo, an abstract/geometric background, or a professional illustration. Avoid clip art and low-resolution images.
- Readable at thumbnail size: Your cover will appear as small as 150×200px on Gumroad, Etsy, or a website. Test it at that size before finalizing.
Canva Cover Design Tips
- Start with a portrait ratio — 6×9" or 1600×2400px works for most platforms.
- Use a full-bleed background (photo or gradient) for visual impact.
- Keep the title in the top half so it's visible in thumbnail previews.
- Create a 3D mockup version using Canva's Mockup app for marketing materials.
Choose Colors That Match Your Reader's World
A business eBook should feel structured and credible — deep blues, charcoals, and clean whites. A wellness guide should feel calming and approachable — sage greens, warm creams, and muted rose. Use ColorSense on a piece of content your ideal reader already loves to extract a palette that speaks their visual language, then build your cover in Canva around those tones.
