How to Build a Design Portfolio Website on Wix (Step-by-Step)

A portfolio website is your most important business asset as a freelance designer. This is the step-by-step process for building one on Wix — from signing up to publishing a site that looks professional, loads fast, and converts visitors into enquiries.

Step 1: Sign Up and Choose Your Starting Point

Go to Wix and create a free account. When prompted, choose "Create a New Site" — you'll be asked whether to use the AI builder (Wix ADI) or start from a template.

Wix ADI — answers a short questionnaire and builds a first draft automatically. Good if you want a starting point to refine.
Template — browse 900+ designs and pick the closest to your vision. Better if you have a clear aesthetic in mind.

For designers, the template route usually produces better results — you can search "portfolio," "photography," or "creative agency" to filter options relevant to your work.

Step 2: Pick a Template That Matches Your Work's Tone

Don't pick a template based on its color scheme — you're going to change the colors anyway. Pick it based on layout structure: how many columns does the portfolio grid use? How is the header positioned? Does it feel editorial and spacious, or bold and graphic?
