How to Create a Professional Logo in Canva (Step-by-Step)
Canva isn't just for social media — it has everything you need to design a clean, professional logo. Here's a step-by-step process that actually produces results.
A logo doesn't need to be complicated. The best logos — Nike, Apple, Airbnb — are simple, scalable, and memorable. Canva gives you the tools to achieve that. Here's a process that works.
Step 1: Start with Your Color Palette
Before you open a blank canvas, define your brand colors. Upload a mood board image or brand photo to ColorSense to extract a palette. Choose 1–2 primary colors for your logo — more than that creates visual noise.
Step 2: Choose Your Logo Type
- Wordmark — just your brand name in a distinctive font (e.g., Google, FedEx). Best for unique brand names.
- Lettermark — initials only (e.g., IBM, HP). Best for long brand names.
- Icon + wordmark — a symbol alongside your name (e.g., Apple, Twitter/X). Most versatile.
Step 3: Build in Canva
- Open Canva and create a new design at 500×500px (square logos scale to anything).
- If using an icon, search Canva's element library for a shape or symbol that represents your brand. Recolor it to your brand palette.
- Add your brand name in your chosen font. For wordmarks, the font is everything — pick from the pairings list or upload a custom font.
- Align elements using Canva's built-in alignment tools.
- Download as PNG with transparent background for digital use, and as SVG if available on your plan.
One Critical Rule
Test your logo at small sizes — profile picture, favicon, business card. If it's unreadable at 32px, simplify it. Great logos work at every scale.
