3 Text Effects Every Creator Needs to Know in Canva
These three text effects transform plain words into design elements. They're built into Canva, take under a minute each, and make your content look professionally crafted.
Text is often the last thing designers think about styling, but it's the most-read element in any design. Canva has powerful text effects built into its toolbar — here are the three that deliver the most visual impact per minute spent.
1. Neon Glow
Select any text layer, go to Effects → Glow, and set the color to something vibrant — cyan, pink, or lime green work especially well on dark backgrounds. Reduce the intensity to around 60% for a believable glow rather than a radioactive blur.
Best for: Dark-mode social posts, tech content, gaming and music brands.
2. Hollow (Outline Text)
Under Effects → Splice or by setting fill to transparent and adding a stroke, you get outlined text. This technique lets your background image or color show through the letters — creating a sophisticated, editorial look used in fashion magazines.
Best for: Over-image headlines, luxury brand posts, quote cards.
3. Shadow Lift (3D Effect)
Duplicate your text layer, offset it slightly (a few pixels down and to the right), change the duplicate to a dark or muted version of your brand color, and send it behind the original. This creates a letterpress or retro 3D effect that's both eye-catching and timeless.
Best for: Retro brands, bold promotional graphics, Pinterest pins.
Color Matters More Than Effect
Any of these effects live or die based on color choices. Extract your palette from a brand reference image using ColorSense, then apply those exact HEX values in Canva — the result will look intentional rather than accidental.
